If I’m honest I started running to lose weight after having Vincent and it really worked, I don’t find running to be as good for that now but I have lots of reasons why I run.
Here are four of the reasons.
The older I get the more I love time alone. Running is the best time for me to be alone and gather my thoughts. I’m naturally a mover, sitting still most often ends in falling asleep…. so running is the perfect way for me to spend time alone! I love that it also serves as an energizer because a lot of the things that I love doing don’t do that ie. staying up too late drinking wine with friends.
Goals are Fun.
I’m a major goal setter. I used to do a monthly goal recap, you can read one here about my goal setting practice. Maybe I should get back to posting about it?! Running goals are a whole new thing for me, but I’m really loving them as I train for my half-marathon! The cool part is that just like any other goals there are so many ways to set them. I love to change it up. So at the beginning of the week I will mark on my calendar the days I want to run and the distance and if there is anything else special, like easy run, or paced. There are so many options! I even have a shared google doc with a friend (that she so generously shared with me) that acts as a great record of training and a motivator!
It’s probably no surprise to you that feeling good rocks. Days when I wake up tired and overall groggy are nowhere near as good as the days that I wake up well-rested and ready to rock! Running makes me feel so good. Now don’t ask anyone I run with (because I don’t always run alone I do like running with pals sometimes, too) how I feel about hills…they don’t make me feel good. And sometimes my legs feel like lead or I cannot breathe but there is usually a time on my run (even its 5 seconds) where I’m all this is THE BEST. I FEEL AMAZING. And heck, I’ll take 5 seconds.
Community has always been super important to me. I blame this fact on growing up the youngest of 8. Overall, I feel like I can never get enough of people. Running has opened up a whole new community. There is an awesome local running group that I’m a part of and I love meeting new people. I also have found that some of my relationships with people that were pre-existing have gotten stronger when we run together or even share running tips.
Are you a runner? What are your reasons for running? This list barely hits the surface!
I’ve written about running before, specifically about running as prayer.
Go check it to learn about running from that perspective.
Maybe I’ll see ya at a race?!
