Somedays I feel like I spend half of my day scrolling Facebook and the other half trying to keep my shit together (I’m half-joking here, obviously the percentages change :)) Can you relate? If so, these tips are for you!
I am not going to lie to you. I feel like I’m going to lose it way more than the average cat. I’m a highly sensitive person. If you know what I mean then you may be, too. If you think that just means I take things personally (you’d be partly right) it is far more than though and this HuffPost Article explains it so well it could have been written about me specifically.
I am still working out what exactly this means but I think for me it means you lose your shit a lot. So I’m starting with finding ways to curb that. While I’d like to think I’m so unique that nobody else feels this, I know I’m wrong. My bet is a lot of you are nodding in complete agreement and even if you don’t feel “highly sensitive” you can still use these tips they help to focus (my word for the year), relax, and enjoy – all super important things.
So while I some days want to completely change who I am, it’s a little harder than that, and I’ve decided to find ways to accept who I am and work with it because there are lots of good parts of me, too. Plus we all know that old, albeit strange but apt expression, don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.
So here they are the long awaited 5 tips that you can do preemptively or when you lose your shit- I’m cool like that.
1. Turn It Up.
If you’ve ever come to a Small Steps ReFresh then you know I LOVE MUSIC and sometimes I go on ridiculous tangents that make me seem a little nutty about the sound and how it moves me… (If you haven’t been to a ReFresh and you’re local, come join us! It totally helps with keeping it together.)
Find your favorite jam and turn it up. Sing, dance, whatever is your pleasure, but just let the music take you where you need to go. Pandora is my personal fave because I can simply put it in an artist or genre and then they do the rest of the work and I almost always hear something new that I fall instantly in love with.
2. Write It Down.
I’m a writer but even if you’re not this is a great way to change your focus, let go, or even to just slow down. What to write about? Focus on gratitude and take a minute to write some things you’re grateful for. Write out your to do list if that’s what’s overwhelming you. Writing helps us slow our minds and even the repetitive motion of pen to paper can be therapeutic. I also find when I write I hyper focus, which can be really good!
3. Let It Go.
While I love Frozen I do apologize that you know will inevitably have this song in your hand for at least an hour. It’s just too good to leave off. If it’s something specific that irritates you, that you have little to zero control over, ie. that light near your work that is extra long, or the one co-worker who always interrupts right when you get in your groove. Make a conscious choice to let it go. Say it aloud. Write it on a piece of paper and tear it up. Letting things go is a powerful exercise that reminds us of our control over our lives. Which for me is key because most of the time I feel like I’m going to lose my shit it’s because I feel out of control. Reclaiming it and making a commitment to letting go helps me tremendously with this!
4. Wash It Off.
I’m about to make a strange confession that perhaps one should not put on the internet. I’ve never much loved showering. I know that makes me sound stinky but don’t worry I see the benefits and do it anyway. Phew. But something about becoming a mother I think. It’s a combination of the time alone, the fact that being a mom is way dirtier than I expected and often you need to wash the yuck off, and also my love for awesome scents this shampoo , this body wash, or even just a drop of your favorite essential oil.
The thing is now it’s one of my favorite ways to refocus. Jump in (well carefully), wash off the yuck, smell some uplifting scents, and then dry off and go get ’em.
5. Talk It Out.
I have some really amazing friends. People who like talking with me about whatever- I know awesome right?! Picking up the phone or scheduling a coffee date is a great way for me to share how I’m feeling, get my mind off of the tough stuff, and just enjoy. Then the best part is often the listening to how others feel, it makes me feel like I’m not alone and people get me. Just like feeling out of control, feeling alone is probably a close second to why I lose my shit in the first place.
